Mental Health Matters Wales Secures Funding to Deliver Dementia Advocacy Service in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Mental Health Matters Wales (MHM Wales) is delighted to announce that we have been awarded funding to deliver a new Pilot Dementia Advocacy Service across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan from the 1st  January 2025 to the 31st March 2025 . This vital service will provide targeted support for individuals living with dementia and their carers, ensuring they receive the guidance, care, and connections they need to live well throughout their dementia journey.

The Dementia Advocacy Service will act as a single, trusted point of contact for individuals and carers from diagnosis through to end of life, helping to navigate health, social care, and community support systems. Rooted in person-centred care, our service will promote independence, reduce social isolation, and ensure that individuals and families are empowered with knowledge, support, and access to local resources.

Delivered in close partnership with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board , Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan local authorities, and voluntary groups and third-sector organisations, this service aligns with the Welsh Government's commitment to enhancing dementia care through the All-Wales Dementia Pathway of Standards.

Richard Jones, CEO of Mental Health Matters Wales, said: “We are proud to be delivering this much-needed service across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The Dementia Advocacy Service will empower individuals and families to access the right support at the right time, helping them to live with dignity and remain connected to their communities. • Providing "What Matters" conversations to understand and support individual needs.
  • Helping individuals and carers access health, social, and financial services.
  • Supporting future care planning, including Lasting Power of Attorney and advance care decisions.

Workshop 1: Men and Mental Wellbeing

What does men’s mental wellbeing mean to you?

This workshop opens the floor for honest conversations about how we understand and approach our own mental wellbeing. We’ll look at the influence of gender on our experiences, uncover what works (and what doesn’t) in our own mental health routines, and explore how we can go beyond survival to really thrive.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • Self-reflection on Everyday Wellbeing
    • Consider how daily wellness practices fit into your life and explore new approaches to looking after yourself.
  • Surviving to Thriving
    • Shift your focus from simply managing to actively creating a fulfilling and balanced life.
  • Individual and Collective Wellbeing
    • Discover the benefits of combining personal self-care with supportive, community-based approaches.

Workshop 2: Masculinities and Seeking Support

How does masculinity affect our approach to seeking help?

In this session, we’ll delve into the impact of masculinity on the way we ask for and offer support. We’ll discuss how societal expectations shape our relationship with mental health and learn strategies for building stronger networks where men feel comfortable being open and honest.

Highlights include:

  • Building Support Networks
    • Explore ways to create a close network of friends and allies who encourage self-care and openness.
    • Overcoming Barriers to Asking for Help Look at what makes reaching out so difficult and find practical steps to make it easier.
  • Dropping the Mask
    • Reflect on the 'armour' we wear to protect ourselves and consider how lowering it can lead to greater wellbeing.

Workshop 3: Men and Building Supportive Communities

How can we create communities that support everyone?

Our final workshop takes a broader view, looking at how we can move from individual conversations to creating a community-wide culture of support. We’ll explore barriers to support, empathy-building, and how to actively create spaces where mental wellbeing is embraced by all.

What to expect:

  • Active Listening Practice
    • Develop listening skills that allow others to feel truly heard, a vital skill in any supportive community.
